Grammar Game Over

8 May

I have failed you all.

So, over there on the upper right? The Name? That page, where I headached over the pluralization of Phoenix Down, and came to the conclusion that it did not matter?

Today I got Final Fantasy III on DS.

FFIII instruction booklet

Read this.

“Are” is used with plural nouns.

That noun is plural. “Down” is already plural. There’s proof of the right way to do it, right here in this instruction booklet.

I SHOULD HAVE NAMED MY BLOG 99 PHOENIX DOWN.

My spirit is crippled.

Isn’t “are” referring to “some items”? You could remove “like phoenix down” or replace phoenix down with any item, plural or not, and it would still make sense.

I was thinking that, too. But wouldn’t that be poor sentence structure? “Some items like potion are not sold at stores” sounds a lot stranger than “some items like potions are not sold at stores”.
Do the nouns not have to agree with one another in this case?

Then again, “some item like potion” sounds even dumber.

      I hate English.

Well… I think the original should really be written as “Some items, like phoenix down, are not sold at stores”.

“Some items, like potion, are not sold at stores,” makes sense to me because “potion” is how the item appears in the shop and inventory. “Potions” would work too, though, because you can get more than one.

I don’t think the nouns have to agree, because “items” can refer to hundreds of different things. If there was only one of a certain item, it wouldn’t make sense to write it as plural. “Some items, like Legendary Weapon, are not sold at stores,” doesn’t make sense to me.

Of course, probably none of this helps with figuring out if phoenix down is plural or not. (I personally think the plural is “phoenix downs”.)

Ah, yeah, that all makes sense…thanks for contributing. XD I’m glad its pluralization is still up in the air.

Mind if I screenshot these comments? I’ll probably post them. If you don’t want your name on there I can take it off.

I’m going to be recording my quest for the right answer for the rest of forever.

You could make one by reposting it on Facebook. ;D
      Thanks, friend.
I see you were awake at five in the morning. I assume you were slacking off. I hope your math homework got done.
